Character essays, story and visual analysis about Vagabond.
In the aftermath of Sekigahara, Takezo’s physical power keeps him alive but offers no answer to what he should become. The manga’s fugitive opening makes survival feel less like victory than an unfinished question.
When Takuan enters Takezo’s early story, the conflict shifts from whether the fugitive can overpower his pursuers to whether power is the only measure he recognizes. Their encounter makes self-command feel more difficult than winning a fight.
Vagabond’s swordplay gains much of its force from what the page leaves unresolved. Inoue’s changing line, open space, and attention to bodies make an attack feel like a risk unfolding, rather than a clean emblem of mastery.
Matahachi’s path alongside Takezo complicates the idea that only fearlessness counts as ambition. In their early lives after Sekigahara, the friends’ contrasting choices reveal two different ways to imagine what survival might make possible.
