What Cornifer's map doesn't show you yet

Cornifer’s area maps give Hallownest’s passages a shape, but filling them in takes the Quill, exploration, and a bench stop. Pair that map with the Wayward Compass when you need to see where the Knight is right now.

Coverage: Covers Cornifer, Iselda’s shop in Dirtmouth, the Quill, benches, and the Wayward Compass; no story revelations.

Find Cornifer by following the clues

Cornifer sells maps for the areas he has reached. When you enter an unfamiliar part of Hallownest, listen for his humming and watch for the paper trail he leaves behind. Those clues can help you find him without turning the area into a marked route: you still have to explore the passages and decide which branches to follow. Buy the area map when you meet him, especially if you expect to spend time searching nearby paths.

A map and a marker for your current position are separate tools. The Wayward Compass is a Charm: equip it and it shows where the Knight is on the map. Without it, a map can give you the area’s shape while leaving you to work out where you stand within it. If you keep reaching familiar junctions but cannot tell which corridor you are in, the Compass addresses that immediate problem; it does not fill unexplored space or choose a destination for you.

Buy the Quill from Iselda in Dirtmouth

Cornifer’s sketch is only the start of your record. Iselda sells the Quill in her Dirtmouth shop, and owning it lets the map fill in explored areas when you rest at a bench. Plan for that update as part of your exploration loop: buy a map from Cornifer, travel through its passages, then stop at a bench to see the areas you have explored added to the map.

This sequence matters when you are deciding whether to keep pushing onward or turn back. Before a bench rest, you may have walked through new rooms without seeing them reflected in your map. If you are unsure which branch to investigate next, returning to a bench can make the newly recorded layout easier to read. The Quill records explored areas; it does not reveal unvisited passages, so an empty part of the map remains a useful clue about where your knowledge stops.

Use the map to plan a return

At a bench, look at the updated map and connect it to landmarks you remember: a junction, a dead end, or a passage that led away from the main route. With the Wayward Compass equipped, you can locate the Knight against that layout and choose a direction with more confidence. For example, if a newly filled passage ends near a junction you have already visited, you can return there and try the branch you left unexplored instead of retracing the whole area at random.

The map is most helpful as a record of where you have been, not as an instruction to clear every path in one visit. If you reach an unfamiliar fork, choose a branch, note the landmarks, and use the next bench stop to see how that walk fits the larger layout. When the current position is still unclear, equip the Compass; when the layout itself is incomplete, keep exploring and return to a bench. These are different navigation problems, and the game gives you different tools for each.

Let uncertainty point to your next step

Cornifer’s humming and dropped papers can help you find a mapmaker while you are still learning the area. Once you have the sketch, the Quill and benches turn later exploration into a clearer record. Treating those cues as part of navigation keeps you moving: listen as you explore, buy the local map when you find Cornifer, and check the result after resting. The game leaves room for detours, but you have a practical way to remember how those detours connect.

When you feel lost, identify what is missing. If you cannot place yourself on a map you own, the Wayward Compass can show your location. If the map has blank areas, walk through the passages you want to learn and rest at a bench with the Quill. If you cannot find Cornifer, look for the paper trail and listen for his humming. Each clue narrows a different kind of uncertainty, so getting lost can lead to a concrete next action instead of another aimless loop.
