Valvatorez: the promise behind the sardines

Disgaea 4 builds its revolution around a vampire whose ridiculous food obsession sits beside an unusually serious idea of keeping his word.

Coverage: Premise and early character setup

A fallen position, a stubborn standard

Valvatorez begins Disgaea 4 as a Prinny instructor in Hades. The distance between that job and the grandeur of a vampire makes an immediate joke, but his refusal to abandon a promise gives him a standard that does not depend on his current position.

His attachment to sardines is funny partly because he presents it with absolute conviction. The comic scale is tiny; the commitment is enormous. Disgaea 4 repeatedly places those two scales beside each other.

Fenrich wants a different restoration

Fenrich’s loyalty is tied to an image of what his lord ought to be. Valvatorez’s own priorities are less convenient. That creates a conflict within the alliance: both characters can want Valvatorez to succeed while disagreeing about which parts of him should survive that success.

Watch who defines the objective in their conversations. Fenrich often supplies the strategic explanation. Valvatorez’s apparently unreasonable commitment can then interrupt a plan that looks efficient on paper. The interruption is part of his leadership, rather than a random obstacle to it.

A revolution made of obligations

The game’s political farce is sharper when a promise to a weak or disposable person carries more weight than the wishes of a superior. Valvatorez’s seriousness gives the extravagant speeches something to attach to. He is not merely demanding a higher place in the same queue.
