Artina makes Disgaea 4 suspicious of appearances

An angel presented through theft is exactly the sort of contradiction this Netherworld needs.

The label does not settle the action

Artina disrupts the easy alignment between an angelic appearance and straightforwardly admirable behavior. Her interest in money gives the rest of the party a simple explanation for her. Disgaea 4 has good reasons to make that explanation feel inadequate.

A scene involving Artina often invites a quick judgment before changing the context around it. The trick is not to decide that every suspicious action must secretly be good. It is to notice how eagerly other characters believe they already know what kind of person they are dealing with.

Valvatorez recognizes a problem before a solution

Artina’s place beside Valvatorez is tied to the game’s interest in memory, obligation and the meaning of a promise. An apparent resemblance or contradiction can matter before the story supplies an explanation.

For a first playthrough, keep the uncertainty alive. The useful question is what the resemblance makes Valvatorez do, rather than which later revelation a summary says it foreshadows. That preserves the experience of watching his judgment operate under incomplete information.

An angel in a political farce

Artina also keeps the moral vocabulary unstable. If “angel,” “demon” and “thief” cease to provide complete explanations, the party has to look at actions and consequences. That is where Disgaea’s jokes can carry an unexpectedly serious argument.
