How to catch up before FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION
Square Enix has set April 8, 2027 for the third remake-project entry. Its official catch-up guidance points to two earlier games and Streamlined Progression options; this guide turns that information into a flexible route for returning players.

Coverage: Spoiler-light: covers official release information, the announced premise, and progression systems without discussing story turns from the earlier games.
Start with the route, not the completion list
SQUARE ENIX announced FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION as the third and final entry in the remake project, with an April 8, 2027 release date. Its official notice names FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE and FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH as the two earlier entries and says both are available on several platforms. That gives returning players a clear order, but it does not mean every optional activity is required before the finale. [1]
Set a personal finish line before you begin. One player may want to follow the central story; another may want to explore side quests, build materia, or revisit character scenes. Those are different goals, so a catch-up plan should not quietly turn into a checklist of every marker on the map. The announcement’s practical point is that the first two games can be revisited with Streamlined Progression options if you want to focus on the story.
Choose assistance to match your reason for replaying
The official release notice lists options including unlimited HP and MP, a constantly full ATB gauge, and easier weapon-ability acquisition. These options can reduce some combat and progression friction. They do not replace the story or make the games identical to watching a summary; they give the player control over how much resistance to keep in the route. [1]
A practical approach is to change only the setting that addresses the obstacle. If you are comfortable with fights but short on time, do not assume you need to change combat at all. If a difficult encounter repeatedly interrupts the narrative, use an assistance option for that stretch and review it later. If learning weapon abilities is the part slowing you down, the relevant acquisition option may be more focused than changing every battle condition. The goal is to keep the story moving at a pace you choose.
Treat the two games as separate experiences
REMAKE INTERGRADE and REBIRTH are both described by Square Enix as entries in the same project, but each is still a full game with its own pacing and systems. Plan a break between them if you want one. At the end of the first, write down what you want to remember—who matters to Cloud, what questions remain, and which combat habits you liked. That short note can be more useful than trying to hold every side activity in memory.
When you reach REBIRTH, give its own party and exploration systems room to make an impression. A previous game’s build should not become a rule for the next one. The Nintendo product page describes Revelation as combining real-time action with command-based combat, party switching, Tactical Mode, and customization through weapons, armor, skills, materia, and the new FITS system. These are announced features for the upcoming game, not a reason to predict a best build before playing it. [ffviiNintendo2026]
Keep save bonuses in perspective
The official Nintendo listing says save data from REMAKE INTERGRADE and REBIRTH can qualify for bonuses in Revelation, and specifies that the relevant save must be on the Nintendo Switch 2 console. It also says the bonuses unlock after completing the main game even without save data. That makes the bonuses optional extras, not a gate to the next story. Platform and save conditions matter: check the current platform-specific listing before assuming that a save on one device qualifies on another. [ffviiNintendo2026]
If you already have a save, keep it where the listing requires and verify it is recognized before expecting a bonus. If you do not, there is no need to replay solely for that purpose. The new game is announced for April 2027, leaving time to choose a pace, skip optional work that does not interest you, and enter the finale with the story beats you care about fresh.
