All + Restore: how linked Materia changes a party's options

In the original 1997 Final Fantasy VII, Green Magic Materia teaches spells while linked blue Support Materia changes how compatible spells work. Slot connections, AP growth, and Materia stat effects make assigning magic to Cloud, Tifa, or Barret a practical equipment decision rather than a permanent class choice.

Connected Restore and All Materia slots lead to group healing, while disconnected slots do not form a pair.

Coverage: Covers original 1997 Final Fantasy VII’s equipment, Materia, and AP systems; no story spoilers.

Green Materia moves magic between characters

Green Magic Materia supplies spells to whoever equips it. That lets you give Cloud, Tifa, or Barret access to similar magic instead of treating healing or attack spells as permanently tied to one character. The choice is useful when you want to change who can respond to a fight’s needs: equip Restore on the character whose setup you want to carry healing, and that character can cast it while the Materia is equipped.

This flexibility does not erase the differences between party members. Their Limit Breaks and equipment still distinguish them, and a spell Materia uses an equipment slot that could hold something else. Materia can also modify character stats, so moving a spell is not entirely free of consequences. When you reassign Green Materia, check the character’s resulting stats as well as whether the spell is now available to the person you intended.

A linked pair gives Support Materia a job

Blue Support Materia needs a compatible Materia in a linked pair of slots. All is a Support Materia; Restore is Green Magic Materia. Put All and Restore beside each other in connected slots and the All + Restore pairing lets Restore support group healing. The connection is essential: putting All in one slot and Restore in a separate, unlinked slot does not create the pairing, even if both pieces of Materia are equipped on the same weapon or armor.

For a practical hypothetical, imagine Cloud has armor with one linked pair and you want him to carry group healing. Place Restore and All in that connected pair, then use any remaining slots for other needs. That reserves both slots for the combined effect, so you have fewer places available for other Materia on that armor. All also has limited uses, which increase as its Materia level grows; keep that limit in mind when deciding whether this setup should handle healing throughout a stretch of play.

AP develops Materia separately from characters

Materia gains AP separately from character levels. A character can gain levels while an equipped Materia develops through AP, so the two kinds of progress do not simply rise together. If you want a particular Restore or All to keep growing, it must be equipped where it can gain AP; swapping it out changes which Materia are being developed. This makes loadout changes relevant both to the abilities you can use now and to the Materia you are advancing.

Weapons and armor differ in Materia growth, so check the growth shown for a piece of equipment when AP development matters to your plan. Keeping a Materia equipped on gear with a different growth rate changes its development pace. That can make a piece of equipment worth considering even when its slot layout is not the only thing you care about. The useful comparison is concrete: which Materia do you want to develop, and what growth does the equipment you are choosing provide?

Build around the next stretch of play

Before leaving a menu, check three things: whether the spell you need is equipped, whether each blue Support Materia has a compatible partner in linked slots, and whether the resulting stat changes suit the character carrying the setup. If Restore is on Tifa but All is on Cloud in a separate, unlinked slot, neither character has the All + Restore combination. Move the Materia into a linked pair on one character’s gear if you want group healing, and consider the AP growth of that weapon or armor while you do so.

Then decide who should carry the responsibility. If Barret has a linked pair free and you want the healing setup on him, equipping Restore and All there gives him access to that combination; Cloud can keep a different magic loadout. The tradeoff is that Barret’s pair is occupied, All has limited uses that grow with its level, and the Materia may change his stats. Revisit the arrangement when you change equipment or party needs. Magic makes roles adjustable, while each character’s Limit Breaks and gear continue to shape what that role feels like.
