Disgaea Novels Gallery

Here are scans and a brief synopsis from each Disgaea novel as of this writing (October 2008). The novels are, with two exceptions, written by Sow Kamashiro; and mostly illustrated by Chou Niku (who also has a homepage). Yes, Chou Niku literally means "Super Meat." It's a rather clever pseudonym, if you ask me, albeit not very cute. Anyway, please enjoy the scans!

  Disgaea Novels published by Media Works

These two strange little novels predate the Enterbrain Disgaea novels listed below. Both the Media Works and the Enterbrain novels are officially licensed by Nippon Ichi, but whereas the Enterbrain novels tell a coherent story with a single canon (with one exception), the Media Works novels are just... strange.

Makai Senki Disgaea

ISBN 978-4840223157. Published May 2003. Story by Akikura Junna, artwork by Takehito Harada.
I really can't tell what exactly this novel is about. It seems to start as an alternate universe retelling of the game with a Flonne-centric focus. Then it ends with a bunch of stuff about Maderas and Vyers. M'eh, maybe if I sit down and read it carefully someday it will make sense. Somehow.

Makai Senki Disgaea: Makai de Tenshou ("Reborn in the Makai")

ISBN 978-4840224734. Published August 2003. Story by Aso Ryou, artwork by Takehito Harada and Chou Niku.
This is the infamous omake novel told from a Prinny's point of view. I haven't read through it for myself, but it got *scatching* reviews on Amazon.co.jp. Apparently it's quite... boring.

  Disgaea Novels published by Enterbrain

These eight numbered novels from Enterbrain could very well be considered the "real" Disgaea novels. These are all written by Sow Kamashiro. This seven-novel series starts with a novelization of the game, and then continues with a sort of Expanded Universe set of sequels. Very interesting for fans of the original game!

01. Makai Senki Disgaea: Enter the Maoh

Novelization of the game. Pretty straightforward and boring, but it has some very nice illustrations.

02. Makai Senki Disgaea: Revelations

ISBN 978-4757716360. Published November 2003. Story by Sow Kamashiro, artwork by Chou Niku.
The first of the real "expanded universe" novels. This novel is set ten years after the events of the first Disgaea game. Throughout the first ten years of Laharl's rule, the Demon World has been peaceful. However, Baal, the gigantic demon whom Laharl's father previously sealed up, breaks his seal and begins ravaging the town around Laharl's castle. Laharl deals with Baal, but it turns out that Baal is only the beginning of a brewing rebellion... This novel introduces the first batch of new characters: Laharl's uncle Vesuvio*, his aunt Yasurl*, and his cousins Shas and Kira, as well as Gordon and Jennifer's daughter Jane. *These name spellings are a total and complete stab in the dark. I have no idea what they're actually intended to be.

03. Makai Senki Disgaea: Returned

ISBN 978-4757717510. Published February 2004. Story by Sow Kamashiro, artwork by Chou Niku.
This novel begins one hundred years after the end of the previous novel. Seraph Lamington sends Laharl an invitation to visit Heaven. Seeing no reason to refuse, Laharl accepts. While Laharl and his party are in Heaven, however, a terrible crisis errupts. Heaven is under attack, for the first time after thousands of years of peace. When Prinny!Kira teams up with Carter to plot revenge against Laharl, they have no qualms about involving Heaven in their dastardly machinations. This novel introduces the second batch of new characters, namely Flonne's family: her father Terl, her mother Erl, and her younger sister Ozonne. I haven't read this novel yet, but according to a reviewer on Amazon.co.jp, the first time that Flonne's parents meet Laharl is a must-read scene. Ozonne also tries to insert herself as a point in a love triangle between Laharl and Flonne, with, er, limited success. And finally.... He's baaaaaack! Vyers returns, albeit after having had a bit of a career change, and thus Vyers/Lamington slash comes careening dangerously close to canon. And like I said, I haven't read the novel, so I have no idea how they explain the fact that Carter is still alive, over one hundred years after the end of the game.

04. Makai Senki Disgaea: On Love (Part One)

This novel takes place several years after the end of "Returned." Laharl is sucked into a mysterious pot and vanishes. Etna and Flonne chase after him, and find themselves lost in another world. Meanwhile, certain demons left behind in the Demon World conspire to change the very nature of the world itself, in order to overthrow Laharl's rule. When Laharl and company meet a woman named Sakura, they are swept up in a conflict that sends them on a trip to the past of the Human World. Laharl and Flonne meet a very important person in the past, while meanwhile in the Demon World, the conspiracy against Laharl grows deeper and stronger.

05. Makai Senki Disgaea: On Love (Part Two)

When Laharl and Flonne attempt to return to their original world, their time machine is destroyed, and they are thrown into a space-time rift. The two of them end up in the Human World one hundred years ago. It's a good thing Laharl and Flonne just happen to know a certain mechanically-gifted human family that lived one hundred years ago... Meanwhile, in the demon world, Sakura and her army clash violently with the remainders of Laharl's royal family. As Etna and company struggle to defend Laharl's throne, Laharl and Flonne enlist the aid of Jane, Gordon, and Jennifer to return them home.

06. Makai Senki Disgaea: Battle of the Maohs

The inevitable crossover with Phantom Kingdom (Makai Kingdom in North America) is here! It's one megalomaniacal Maoh versus another megalomaniacal Maoh, with plenty of par-for-the-course Disgaea insanity thrown into the mix. Also, Doraemon cosplay. Did I mention the Doraemon cosplay?

07. Makai Senki Disgaea: Heart of the Maoh

ISBN 978-4757730878. Published December (25th!) 2006. Story by Sow Kamashiro, artwork by Chou Niku.
Apparently, this novel is a sequel to Disgaea 2: Mask of the Maoh, which would be the novelization of the Disgaea 2 game. But this novel is also a part of the continuity of the previous six novels. So that would make the time frame for this novel... Something like one hundred years after the events of the Disgaea 2 game, apparently. Anyway, after the war with that "other Demon World" from the previous book is finished, Laharl returns to his own Demon World. But Shas accidentally regresses Laharl back to a baby! In order to save Laharl, Etna and Flonne must travel back through time... Again.

09. Makai Senki Disgaea: Three Dash!

Okay, so... This novel is numbered as "#9" because apparently School of the Maoh (see below) is #8 in the series, although School of the Maoh takes place in an alternative universe. Eh, whatever. The important thing is that THIS novel is continuous with the Expanded Universe canon. Although actually, this book isn't really a novel per se... It's more like a collection of short stories, that feature Disgaea 3 and Makai Kingdom characters interacting with Laharl and Company. Or rather, the group of Laharl and Friends plus the Makai Kingdom characters somehow end up in the world of Disgaea 3... I dunno, something involving a picnic. A bunch of short, self-contained stories ensue.

Yes, it's an alternate universe. Yes, that's a cutesy school setting. Yes, those are school uniforms on the cover. And yes, Chou Niku really did use a radically different style for his illustrations in this novel as opposed to previous novels.
